History of San Diego

San Dieguito and La Jolla people were the original inhabitants of the region. Portuguese-born explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European who explored the region. The area was originally known as San Miguel but in 1602 it was renamed as San Diego by Sebastian Vizcaino. San Diego played a major role during World War II. Due to the presence of numerous military installations and defense manufacturers, the city was the major hub of military and defense activity during the war. Since the beginning of the 20th century, many American tuna canning industry and tuna fishing fleet were set up in San Diego and it became "the tuna capital of the world".
